Rehydration 2024
As the drop lands upon a node, organic and inorganic matter dissolves, seeping into the dehydrated pores and cavities, bridging
molecular, electric and sonic bonds. Within the interface of a drop - Life emerges.
Rehydration is an audiovisual performance for electro-organic synthesizers, developed as part of the broader artistic research (see also Critical Systems and Elemental Encounters). The performance is an exploration of the material boundaries of electronics through liquids - liquids that invite environment, both biotic and abiotic to act upon the sound: temperature, humidity, vibrations, chemical species, gravity or even microbial become intertwined within the oscillations.
Rehydration, originates from a broader concept of extended - fragile and sensitive, "soft" electronic instruments and elemental techniques of playing with them. The concept was initially inspired by J. Lovelocks and L. Margulis Gaia theory of bio-geological evolution, that proposes an extended view upon organisms, and their influence on the environment, embracing the nearly infinite reciprocities, between earth and it’s inhabitants. I found Gaian perspective upon organisms as an inspiring leap-point to reimagine electronic sound circuit design towards one that could interact with biotic and abiotic environment in it’s full functionality: exposed and vulnerable – soft circuits, that are controlled by biophysical environment as much as they are by a human.

Ærials (the circuits in this performance) exist in relationship with water – water that dissolves reagents, conducts reactions, hosts microorganisms and completes the oscillating circuit. Due to liquid medium, the Ærial material boundaries no more end at their epidermis – an enclosure with switches and dials, or a resistor leg. Instead, the liquid intersection invites environment, both biotic and abiotic to act upon their vitality, whether it’d be temperature, humidity, chemical species, microbial life and it’s residues or even gravity. Fragile, vulnerable and exposed yet non-separate they oscillate.
